The Basic Early Assessment of Reading™ (BEAR®) measures a student’s development throughout the school year in the essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and oral reading fluency. Appropriate assessment and early identification of struggling readers allow teachers to target instruction, helping students learn the skills they need to become successful readers. BEAR helps educators: (A) determine and diagnose students’ reading and language-arts skills, (B) plan instruction to meet a student’s or classroom’s needs, (C) document student progress throughout the school year, and (D) evaluate the effectiveness of instructional programs.

The BEAR consists of four complete criterion-referenced assessments, which can be administered in their entirety or mixed and matched to augment an existing reading program.

Initial-Skills Analysis - designed to provide a quick check of students’ skills in Reading Basics, Comprehension, and Language Arts at the beginning of the school year to determine students’ strengths and weaknesses
Specific-Skill Analysis - designed to target more specific skills in the areas of Reading Basics, Comprehension, and Language Arts
Oral Reading Fluency Assessment - helps teachers assess students’ accuracy and fluency
Summative Assessment - intended for use at the end of the school year, providing a comprehensive view of students’ skill development by foundation skill area
